Various phases of battle are represented using six map sheets. March 7, 1865, though not a part of the battle, it is included in order to show how the units were positioned at the start of the battle. The paper maps show the terrain the way it was in 1865. Colors and a plastic sheet (overlay) separate last century's landscape from this century's features.

The maps are 1:25,000 scale. This is roughly 3 inches to a mile.  A UTM grid system is part of the overlay. Some using a Global Position System (GPS) receiver can pinpoint any location on the ground.
