The North Carolina Society of Historians Presents

Joe M. McLaurin Newsletter Award for  Newsletter "Heritage Trail "

Hickory, NC. The North Carolina Society of Historians presented awards to two Lenoir County publications at their Annual Awards Banquet on October 11th at the Gateway Conference Center.  Heritage Trail, the quarterly newsletter of the Heritage Genealogical Society of Lenoir, Jones and Greene counties was chosen by a panel of judges to receive the Joe M. McLaurin Newsletter Award. Jacqueline Rouse Boykin, newsletter editor, accepted the award. The Willie Parker Peace History Book Award was presented to W. Keats Sparrow and in memory of Clayton Brown Alexander for The First of Patriots and Best of Men: Richard Caswell in Public Life published by the Colonial Commission. Both publications were recognized for the many valuable contributions they have made toward the collection, preservation and perpetuation of North Carolina history. The society was formed in 1941 for the purpose of collecting and preserving North Carolina history, traditions, artifacts, genealogies and folklore on the state, county and local levels and to reward those who fulfill these objectives in exceptional ways. Awards categories are:  Museums, Newspaper and Magazine Articles, Books, Newsletters, Journals, and Multimedia as well as Historian of the Year. There are no entry fees, but all entries must promote North Carolina history.
