Dear
Friend,
The Lenoir
County Battlefield Commission working under the auspice of the Historical
Preservation Group has made great strides in developing and preserving the
First Battle of Kinston and the Wyse Fork Civil War Battlefields. Below are
listed some of the accomplishments to date.
- Over 200 acres
of battlefield have been permanently saved.
- Six Civil War
Trails markers have been erected on landscaped areas of the battlefields
- Four other
interpretive markers will be erected this year.
- Wil King
Memorial Site has been developed and today it is one of the most beautiful
sites in Kinston. Here you may walk where soldiers met in battle and
discover the story of what happened there.
- A parking area
at Camp Southwest on the Wyse Fork battlefield has been cleared.
- Cultural
Resource Survey of the battlefields has been completed
- Portions of
the First Battle of Kinston Battlefield are listed on the National
Register of Historic Places
The
Rivermont area of the First Battle of Kinston Battlefield is in need of
further development. The needs are site preparation which would include
providing a battle area, camp sites, trails and interpretation. What an
educational asset it would be, to be able to provide interpretation of this
hallowed ground.
Proceeds
from the Wil King Antebellum Ball will go toward this project. Please help
us in our endeavor to make a vision for Lenoir County become a reality. The
Wil King Antebellum Ball is our main source of fund raising for the
battlefield projects. We hope you will join us in making a difference in
Lenoir County.
Respectfully yours,
Jane Phillips,
President Historical Preservation Group Dr. Lyle Holland,
Chairman Battlefields Commission
Dr. Lonnie Blizzard, Battlefield
Commission Rita Spence, Chairwoman Antebellum
